Human rights: a global perspective on why there's still a long way to go

Make human rights great again

How do we define human rights? Civil rights or social consensus? Growing limitations on human rights. Freedom to and freedom from, why so controversial?

OUR PLANNED OUTCOME

THE AIM OF OUR PROJECT: Understand Human Rights from a global outlook, increase awareness about human rights issues through graphic communication and explore different cultural perspectives regarding human rights violations.

OUR ISSUES:

  • gender inequality
  • repression of civil rights
  • religious fundamentalism, intolerance and extremism
  • discrimination faced by minority groups around the world.

Details of our group project, it’s outcome and process can be found through this link: https://thecivilperspective.movie.blog/our-group-outcome/

NATIONAL PERSPECTIVES

Pakistan

Enforced disappearances. Child marriage & lack of education. Honor killings. Crackdown on human rights activists. The blasphemy law and death penalty. Freedom of religion and expression.

Lebanon

Frustration and neglect for years. A government steeped in corruption. A long overdue uprising by the citizens. Misuse of authority and detention of peaceful protesters. Cases of torture.

Saudi Arabia

An infamous history of gruesome human rights violations. Concealment of major torture cases and executions. Oppression and marginalization of minorities. Regressive laws and suppression of free speech.

Iran

Crackdown against activists. Depriving minorities of their rights. Detention of women’s rights activists. Rampant honor killings and cases of torture and beatings. Oppression and executions in the name of religion.

Our personal thoughts & viewpoints

In an era where defending and endorsing human rights is seen as more controversial than committing its’ violations, we need a complete change of perspective and need to reevaluate our stances on these issues. Why are we so reluctant to wake up to these issues and confront them instead of conforming to this culture of indifference and hostility?

Ahmad

It is the 21st century and yet there is a good chunk of our species, the one gifted with knowledge and has the capacity to think in a progressive manner that still is in denial to accept change like most of us have by setting our differences aside and understanding that this is more than just our trivial sentiments.

News

2019: A year of global protests

2019 was a year of repression but also that of resistance.

Following is a list of useful links detailing the key protests and marches of 2019:

The french ‘yellow vests’ march
Lebanon’s anti-government demonstrations
‘Clerics get lost!’ Iran’s raging protests
Hong Kong’s reawakened pro-democracy movement

IT’S 2020.

WE SHOULD BE ADVOCATING FOR HONEY BEES BY NOW, NOT BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.

Its strange how we live in a time where the advocacy for human rights is seen as more controversial and criminal than its violation.
